Sponsors should be local in order to more fully participate with their candidates.
Sponsors must be a member of the Catholic Church and initiated in the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.
A sponsor should be an active and participating member of their own faith community and not prohibited by Canon Law from participating in the sacramental life of the Church.
Parents have a distinct role in a young person’s sacramental formation and therefore are NOT to serve as Confirmation sponsors for their own children.
The sponsor will be a person willing to share and support the candidate in the struggle to live a Christian life and serve as a model of Christian discipleship and a mentor for the adolescent Catholic.
As a symbol of the continuous relationship between the universal church and the young person throughout his or her formation “it is desirable that the Godparent at Baptism, if available, also be the sponsor at Confirmation”. In any case, a sponsor is to be invited to participate actively throughout the Confirmation formation process and after.
A sponsor must be at least 18 years of age and of sufficient maturity to fulfill the role of a sponsor.
